During trading hours, the NYSE acts as a financial auction house to buy and sell shares of publicly traded companies on behalf of investors. In the past, the NYSE relied entirely on a trading floor and public quotation system, but now most NYSE shares can be traded on its integrated electronic platform.

The performance of all NYSE listed stocks is measured by the NYSE Composite Index. Since all NYSE stocks are subject to stringent listing requirements and include many foreign stocks, the index is well known to investors for its quality and global diversification.

Although the NYSE was once a private institution, it went public in 2005 and gained its current scale and global reach through multiple mergers. In 2013, the NYSE was acquired by the Intercontinental Exchange for $11 billion.
